This quilt was made by Mable Lawler from scraps left over from other projects. Each little piece was cut and sewn by hand. After the top was made it was quilted by hand, in a quilting frame. This is a beautiful example. The Grandmother’s Flower Garden was one of Grandmother’s most popular patterns. The quilt shown is similar to many quilts of this design from those early days. This scrap quilt shows very little wear, it is just as warm as the day it was finished over 80 years ago. To save washing the top of the quilt was protected by a decorative strip that was removed and washed. Each square of the afghan was knit and then they were knit together, called Granny Square.
